I just got a response for the kind people (Julia) at BMW about my 72 VIN history. What a great service !

Dear Mr Williams,

Thank you for your email.

The BMW 3.0 CS Automatic US VIN 2250207 was manufactured on June 19th, 1972 and delivered on June 27th, 1972 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Black, paint code 086.

Nice to have an original black car!

I forgot...does it still have an Auto? If so, keeping it or going 5-speed?
 
Someone once Told me as a general statements about black cars. That only the best cars came black as everything fit better and was the smoothest. Guess you could say the anti-lemons were black. I Have no idea if this idea holds any truth.

It was converted to 5 speed long ago.
In the 1980's according to the paperwork I have. I much prefer manual trans.

I heard that too. That was back when I was working on mass produced Fords. It seems logical
