after many many many months of searching for 'the one', i went a head and pulled the trigger on a 'nacht blue' 72 cs last week on ebay. went around and round for what seemed like an eternity trying to find a coupe with as little rust as possible. being on a budget ($8,000-$14,000) i was willing to pull the trigger on a candidate with so-so body condition if the mechanicals were in reasonable shape or vice versa. ended up with what seems to be a healthy compromise. As you can see from the pics

the body looks to be straight and was able to confirm by way of pre-purchase inspection that there has been no bodywork performed on the car. Teh paint on the hood, top and trunk looks to be weathered some but the vertical surfaces look solid . To the PO's knowledge, all of the paint on the car is original. Interior is a little worn as expected and the trunk looks to be in reasonable shape. The goodies... the 3.5l swap, something i had on my list of future to do's, has already been done, along with the 5spd tranny :D . The PO also included a front air dam (unpainted, not installed), rear springs, 3point belts, a cover and one or 2 other bonus items. The motor is currently set up with dual webers that i found will need to be rebuilt... something that seems to be a reasonable DIY task for the mechanically inclined, which i am. The pre purchase inspection also yielded a few other issues that will need to be addressed mechanically but nothing out of the ordinary considering the cars age. Not crazy at all about the sunroof but the rails and slider seem to be fairly clean and free of rust. Window frames look ok as well but i've seen a few resto jobs on this site that revealed some of the evils that can lurk behind window seals. The rust stains on the underside of the sunroof concern me some but i'm hoping what i find behind the headliner is manageable. Good news is that the drains along the rockers and door bottoms all look to be open and clear. Also - PP inspect. confirmed no visible rust on the undercarriage other than the rusted exhaust piping

immediate To do's -

triple webers
alpinas - or maybe something a little more contemporary but still in keeping with the period ( not sure exactly what that is) -i'd welcome opinions though
front springs (adjustable coilovers maybe?)
new paint - staying with the blue - and thorough rust treatment / prevention
new seat leathers and filler
thorough shake down of the mechanicals and engine compartment

Anyway. I'd welcome all of your opinions. You guys can expect a ton of questions from me over the coming months... you've been warned!

1st question i have is... i'm having the car shipped from california (to baltimore). i'd prefer a covered carrier but have found a reasonable deal and fast delivery (1 week vs 3)if i go with an open carrier. Do you guys think shipping it on an open carrier would be too risky? i've never had experience with this. I'm aware of the risk of road debris with open carriers, but do you think exposure to potentially extreme weather (rain, snow) is something i should be concerned with during transit? Part of me says its only a week so how much harm can come of it. The other half of me doesnt even want to think about it getting touched by even a drop of water. It will be insured during transit either way...

Thanks!

If you can afford it and the company is reliable, I'd go with the closed carrier. OPen carrier companies are not generally aimed at protecting the car, and they run the gamut from horrible to OK ( car not delivered, and had to be picked up at a depot, car late, car had battery acid from another car dripped in the hood, etc).

Looks like you got a very nice well kept specimen.

Welcome to the madness.

new cah

Great color choice. I have the same.

I've done the west to east coast delivery twice now. Drove me nuts each time. waiting for the car.

If you go open carrier delivery, ask for the following:

  • Written proof of insurance provided ahead of time. You should have your own insurance also
Driver should guarantee that the car will not be transferred between carriers
Ask for the top rack one back from the front
Get detailed pics of car condition before it is put on trailer

And l wouldn't believe the one week delivery.

If I could have any wheels on my car, I would have polished silver staggered BBS RS' (sorry, Michael). I have Alpinas now. Had to have 'em, like 'em, but I like the RS' better.

Good luck!

Congratulations on your new CS! My car is the same color combo and the condition is about where I started back in '91

Road Trip!

Seriously, if the car is up to it, the least expensive and minimally stressful way to go is to fly out there and drive it home. There are way to many things that go wrong on an open hauler. I shipped a coupe with a worthless paint job from CA on open hauler and they managed to bollocks up the front subframe by securing it to the truck with chains. It's always sumthin'. Either fetch it yourself or spend the money for an enclosed hauler.

If you do the road trip, get the fluids changed out there, get some spare bits (water pump, belts, etc) and bring a list of contacts along the drive home. BMW_CCA publishes a book of thousands of folks across the country who can be reached for help. I can lend you one if you want it.

transit

Thanks for all the input! i've been a member of a few Audi, Honda and Mazda forums in the past and they were all pretty nice. But E9 is by far the friendliest and most knowledgeable forum i've ever experienced.

Re the road trip. I'm considering that but the potential for winter weather is a concern. Not so much for the south an southwest, but for the last 800 or so mile 'home stretch'. The engine is reported to be in solid shape but the carbs, as i'm told, will need to be rebuilt or replaced. Not sure of the severity of the problem. All they said was that it runs a little rough. I should probably call the shop that did the inspection and get their opinion on the x country trek option.

RE enclosed carriers. Is the process for securing the car different with enclosed carriers than it is with open types? I've pretty much made up my mind that if i do ship it, it will be enclosed. The idea of some yahoo carelessly chaining the car to a truck makes me cringe. AHHH!! and i thought finding the car was hard...

Road trip! I did it with my 3.0.
Ask the seller about roadworthiness. I drove my car that had been sitting for quite a while. Old tired carbs and all. It was a blast!

Roadtrip in newly purchased e9

First congrats on your acquisition - interesting to have someone join the e9 board months before getting an e9 but certainly makes sense. I was a lurker.

When I bought my e9 18 months ago in the southwest corner of Georgia I drove it home - only 800+ miles, not 3000 (and not winter) but it was a blast with no problems at all. I have no radio so it was just me, the Blue Ridge Mountains and the e9

I have the triple Weber 45 setup and Alpina 16 staggered - although they were done by previous owner :D so I can't give technical advice. The Webers work fine and sound great although they are a bit thirsty (as expected).

I am in Bmore also - I also have an unpainted, unmounted front spoiler - let me know when you find someone who knows how to do this properly (I think it needs to be riveted on).

Welcome again. :D :D
