Last week I was in San Diego for work, and I planned some side trips. First was to Trestles, a surf break in Orange County, where I surfed the best waves I have ever encountered in my life on Thursday afternoon. See photos on surfline.com.
The next afternoon, while my friend surfed Windansea, I wandered over to LJI. I mentioned the secret password (e9 owner), and they told me to go into the room with all the goodies. Checked out the restored CSL, two 2002 ragtops, etc. Of most interest to me were the 503 coupe and 3200cs awaiting resto. I had no idea those cars were so BIG. No wonder they were sales duds. They seemed to have the same proportions as a Chevy Bel Air and dwarfed the Coupes and 2002s nearby. Yes, they are pretty, but it is no wonder they nearly brought BMW to bankruptcy. Totally the wrong car for 1950s and 1960s Europe. Were they trying to compete with Rolls Royce? What were they thinking? Carl's teenage son wandered over and explained what he knew about all the cars. He is cutting his teeth on Isettas right now. Pretty great way to grow up, I would say...
