So, I am trying to learn about the engine in the 3.0 CS I bought earlier this year. I have located the number stamped into the bell housing and note, interestingly, that it is exactly the same number as the VIN on my car. Hmmm.

Upon further study, however, I find a head casting date of 79, and a casting number on the head of 12500199. Given that my car was manufactured in 1972, it seems odd that the head would have a 1979 casting date. Moreover, I do not have Zenith carbs, but instead have a set of Weber DGV 32/36 carbs on the car. (Didn't Korman sell a DGAV 32/36 upgrade package?).

I am considering replacement exhaust options (once again) and so, assuming asking the prior owner will be difficult, what else should I be looking at in order to evaluate my engine.

In the days of the CS production the number stamped on the block (not bell housing) is the same as the car VIN. So you have the original block and someone replaced the head with a newer head. Not that unusual. I believe from 1980 onwards the heads had an improved design. Less likely to crack at the water jackets (IIRC).

Those Webers were a common and hasty replacement for Zeniths back in the day. I did it on my first coupe in the 80's, a mistake many others are now finally realizing also.

Nicely put. Have you modified your exhaust?
