Mystery engine for my 1972 E9 3.0 CS

I just bought a 1972 E9 3.0 CS that was someones project that got put on hold for 12 years.. it came completely dismantled ...My question is the engine that came with the car does not have the same Vin# as the car chassis which is Vin# 2240630 and the engine has serial No# +3131050+ located just above the starter motor and there are two other numbers on the block #27A72 and #12524460..
I verified on the BMW Vin Decoder website and it came back "No data related to 3131050 was found!"
Could anyone help me on this.......:sad:

I have a similar problem with a M30 engine block.

There is no number on the block above the starter.
There is a possibility that it has been removed.

Is there a way to tell what the block is by the cast numbers?
It says 2.5/2.8 on the side of the block and it was sold to me as a 2.8 (E12 528 ).

Under the exhaust manifolds are the numbers: 20C80 and 1270002
