Mystery ground cable

While replacing the water hoses and fuel lines I noticed a braided ground cable that is disconnected. It is about six inches long and is attached to the firewall right pretty much directly behind the carb and about six inches below the top of the firewall (it's a '70 2800CS). The end at the firewall is connected but I don't know where the other end is supposed to go... Any ideas?

I'd post a picture of it but I'm not sure how to do that on this site.

Thanks,
Max

Check the top of your transmission and see if there is an orphan bolt that has a piece of that ground cable still attached to it if the ground cable is broken. That bolt would be about 3-4 inches almost directly below the bolt on your firewall that has the ground cable still attached to it. If there is no bolt there then maybe it fell off somehow. If that's not it then someone else can make a suggestion.
Good luck

The strap you refer to is bolted to the firewall and to the top of the bell housing. I also have a 2800cs and there is a smaller bolt near the top left side that the strap uses.
A major pain to get to unless you are already there, IE trans removal, etc.
Another point for grounding can be used if needed and may be easier to install.
Anywhere, like the other bolts on the bell or starter and then to the frame will work! Use another strap if major corrosion present, or breaks.

Thanks for the help. I'm actually taking the bellhousing/trans off tomorrow in order to swap it for the later style one with an internal slave cyl. (older style external slave is NLA :( ). I'll probably just going to buy new ground cables for this ground and the engine to brake booster bracket cable. Any harm with replacing the braided grounds with the non-braided "normal" ones?

I don't believe it matters which type you use. The braid ones are easier to bend in tight places.
Like where you are going.
Trans change is not hard. Get all of your needed parts first, you'll still need something.
T/O bearing and pilot. For the cost, an absolute change is called for.
Does the trans need new front or rear seals, shifter seal? Now is the time to make the repair.
Clutch and pressure plate?
The list just goes on and on.

What is the "engine to brake booster bracket cable" that you referred to? The engine is supposed to be grounded to the firewall by the braided cable you asked about. Is there another?
