I have had a 72 3.0CS auto for 13 years that was imported from Italy.

This switchie type thing was always there and has no wires to it, according to the owners manual this shouldn't have an opening to it and was probably added later.

1. Anybody know what it is, it appears to have a keyhole.

2.Since I'm having a lot of trouble with my ignition lock/switch not going all the way to the start position and not having "spring return" type tension when I turn the key I'm thinking of putting a starter switch in that location.

3.Anybody have a source for a simple starter switch, is toggle better than push button?
Shouldn't it just be connecting the black and the red wire coming out of the back of the ignition switch?

Thanks to all,
Jim C

That location is used for the Hazard Flasher on US models, earlier coupes may have had it located in the under dash panel.

In older cars without a steering column lock, all you need is a switch to energize the ignition and another for the starter. I did this in my '67 VW Type III after both keys were stolen: a toggle switch for the ignition (from my stash-of-parts) and a nice looking chrome momentary switch sourced from a marine supply store (but any momentary switch will do). Install requires that you understand the electrical function of the ignition switch. You can hide one or both switches for "security".

You still have to have a way to unlock the steering column. It's possible to permanently defeat the column lock, but hmmm, I wouldn't unless faced with no other way.
