The crankshaft on my 1970 2800 got all buggered up. The thrust bearing ate into the crank and I was told by a couple of machine shops that these are not worth trying to repair since they are cast. I'm now looking for a good usable crankshaft that I can either turn, or use as is. If anybody has one please get ahold of me. Thank you. 614 296 7035

You might have a few options.

if ecs is correct new ones with bearings are available.

Sean and Hans and company in El Cajon California know BMWs and this cross references to the 2800cs crankshaft. It has 3 sprockets too 2 or the double row timing chain and 1 foe the fuel pump. You may want to ask if it’s been reground.

The part number is the same for a 2800cs crank and a 3.0cs crank. This crank was used in many bmw m30 applications.

Part # 11211716122

Hi. Thanks for reaching out. No, I have not had any luck. I had a forum member reach out saying he had a couple to choose from but never heard back after several email attempts. I called the guys at Autobahn. I actually know them from having worked in El Cajon about ten years ago. They had some 635CSi parts I needed. No luck on any cranks.
I'm now thinking about having mine repaired after all. I've called some shops but have not had anyone commit to the work.

Any other ideas or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Some more pix of the crank.

Any ideas as to why this happened? Degraded or chronically low oil level?

As per Carl Nelson of La Jolla Independent, it's not an uncommon failure. He's seen his share of crank failures like this. I'm not sure what could cause this sort of damage.

I dropped the crankshaft off at Fowler Engines here in Columbus today. They are a very reputable machine shop here in Columbus. I've been taking stuff there for years. They are going to weld it and re-grind it for me.
