Hi all;
OK, I know it's thanksgiving eve and you have better things to do than solve my problems...However, my wife and kids went to spend 4 days on the mainland and I am taking the opportunity to remove the 91 m30b35 engine from the 735 donor and maybe will even have time left to start dismantling the e9.
I was planing on trying to save the harness set up (spent a large part of the morning labeling lots of wires and plugs), although it seems likely from the information I was able to gather that I will end up with some kind of after market system (such as Megasquirt). I have spent the day getting the engine ready for removal and all is ready except for de-tangling the harness from the fuse box and various other area's, and this seems beyond practicality.
So I was wondering if anyone has some objective comments on the likely hood of my being able to use the stock harness and ECU components. This car is automatic and I find myself wondering if the ECU will even be able to run the car correctly with a manual conversion, as it is probably linked in to the tranny as well.
I usually try to save as many parts as I can ''just in case'' but the harness tangle is quite discouraging. Someone recommended I save the ECU and I assumed that implied pulling the harness with it. Is there a simple harness available that will run the injection system 'only' with the stock ECU?
OK am going to leave the harness in the car for now ,remove the engine and trans, and if those of you out there for whom this is a no brainer advise me to do so, I will attempt to remove the harness before having it towed away ...
I thank you all for your help, I am just getting started with BMW's and probably ask some questions that make you smile...On a side note, my wife has jumped on the wagon and went and bought a 635csi last week; the car seems in perfect shape but I would guess it will end up steepening my ''big six'' learning curve. Have a great thanksgiving.

That harness in the 735 is what you need for a megasquirt
Project.
don't worry about it being an automatic

We used one of these for my conversion and removed unneeded wires but they could also remain, you just terminate the unused ends.

Thanks to the both of you for info and the support. I am still not sure how I might go about removing the wiring harness as a ''unit'';a lot of the wiring seems to have no plugs at the end of a run (IE @the fuse box the wires run directly into the fuse rail which is in a metal compartment with the wire bundle running threw a relatively small hole;definitely a lot smaller than the fuse box).At this point it just doesn't look like it was designed with removal and/or replacement in mind.
I will remove the engine tomorrow morning then climb in there and see if things look easier from a standing position...I do appreciate any suggestions you may have. Have a nice Thanksgiving. Josh.

Don can tell you where he cuts the wires but there is plenty of length for the conversion. For example, the wires to the fuse box are long and will be spliced into your chassis harness near the brake booster so much shorter.
