Please help with identifying the motor in my car...

Allegedly from a 7 series.

"Stamped code" on block above starter...

34 6 K A
42503659

Any help is appreciated. Thanks! DCG

I don' think them numbas mean squat, but I'm ready to learn. Now if you could give us the VIN which is stamped on the flat next to the starter mount, we'd have it ID'd in a jiffy, just take that number to realoem and you'll be good!

What year 7 series? An e23? The VIN is 7 numbers usually, the engine from a 745i I have has 7 numbers and is a 1980.

ahhhh! my mistake.

Don't know of a way to confirm 7-digit VINs other than by comparison to known cars. I have an '87 (very early) E32, but it's dark out just now.

34 = 3.4 liter
6 = 6 cylinders
K = Katalysator (catalytic converter)
A = Automatic transmission

The rest, I don't know. BMW Archives can tell you.

Thanks... after much googling...I found this

http://www.jaypix.com/files/engine.pdf

It explains a lot.... Most of my questions were answered. However, the 8 digit number still remais a mystery. I'm guessing that it is a serial number generated by the factory when the motor was built (remanufactured...)

It is a Munich phone number, she stamped it on blocks hoping mechanics would get it.
How can you send a message in a bottle when you are far from the ocean?

The 8-digit number (4 250 3 659) is also explained in the "jaypix" attachment below in dascoupeguy's post.

There are two groups of 4 digits.

The first block contains 4 digits (4 250) with information on the assembly line and serial number of engines produced daily. The first digit "4" is "M30 assembly line". The next 3 digits "250" would be the serial number.

The fifth digit "3" is the first digit of the second block (3 659) that shows the factory code and day of production. The "3" is the factory code for Munich and 659 is the production date code, though I couldn't find out how to decode the date.
