I've got a ZF transmission with what I think is a rumbling bearing and want to pull it out and replace it.
The bearing in question is a 6306. I have purchased an old Rillex 6306 puller as specified by the Factory Service Manual but there's a problem.
The puller has 7 arms and the bearing has 8 ball bearings meaning that it won't work to pull the bearing.

The FSM photos seem to show 6306 bearings with 8 balls. Are there alternative configurations for the bearings, or the pullers?
It's unclear to me what's going on. Different configurations should result in a different number for the bearings, and the puller, that's the whole point.

Any information would be helpful, thanks.

Want a working replacement transmission? I have one packaged for shipment sitting in my basement, pulled in excellent condition from my car when I went to a five speed. It is available cheap. And, if you can wait until May, a buddy of mine is coming up with his truck from Austin; he might be enticed to haul it to you for a nominal cost.

I've actually got a rebuilt Getrag 265/6 sitting in my office and most of the parts I need to install it, but want to try fixing the ZF because I believe it's a good transmission with a minor issue. If I can change out the bearings, I'll put it back in and test it, and maybe run it for a while and decide on the effort of the 5 speed upgrade.
I don't want to discard it. Perhaps it can be used by someone else in the future.

Chris, your spare is a ZF? Very different tranny.

I have a ZF 3HP20 packaged up in the basement that I removed from my car. (I had two spares a couple of weeks ago, but the BW from MaxFish's stash is gone). RealOEM indicates that this the same tranny BMW employed in the 2800, but maybe I missed something.

Incidentally, the ZF used in the 2800 is still available rebuilt from BMW. The price from the web friendly BMW dealers for just over $3k. If you really wanted the confidence of a factory authorized rebuild, I suppose it's worth it.

Ian, I agree with you. I am holding on to mine, a known working tranny, in case a fellow e9 person needs one. If my 5 speed fails, I will change to a 4 speed, not back to the auto.

I knew nothing about the BW tranny I obtained with the parts stash; this and storage space is the reason I trashed it.

answer the question -whats up w tryin to sell him something?
it would have to be a different puller prongs

Alan - I offered my tranny as an alternative to one that needs work, thinking it might be simpler and cheaper for mulberryworks than repairing his. I could then help a fellow coupster and get the tranny out of my basement at the same time.

Obviously, I didn't answer the question because I don't know the answer.

The only reason I seek payment for the tranny I have boxed in my basement is because when I tried to give it away the buyer balked at the shipping costs. I bought the packing materials, packaged it, found a shipper and got a shipping quote and then the buyer balked at $165! So, while I am willing to help keep these cars going, I have concluded if I don't ask for a price for stuff the buyer won't take the transaction seriously. And below some price its not worth my time and energy to do the packaging and deal with shipping.

By the way, this is the reason I priced the bumpers I offered to you at $100. I already have 4 hours in posting pictures, knocking them down, getting packing materials, packaging them, weighing them, etc. Yeah, I got them for free, and after the costs of the packing materials I'll clear $80, but this ain't much of a money maker.

Oops ps..and by that I meant, there.there must be a way to. Modify a puller or find something to work.

Aside from correcting spell. Checking Apple worrying about misinterpretation is monstrous.
