I just did this, you can first try a rebuild, it's easy to do, this is the kit:

I wet sanded the end of the inside cylinder with 2000 grit to get it very smooth before rebuilding.

I just had to change mine too but didn't want to rebuild (no enough hours in my day)... The part is NLA with BMW so to get a replacement one it's either W&N at Euro 245 + shipping + customs or you can get a rebuilt unit from La Jolla Independent for $195 + your core + shipping. I picked up mine from La Jolla and it worked well in the end. The only glitch was that they forgot to install the ring clip that holds the rod in place but this was easily fixed by Carl himself.

The replacement is the e21 master, it sits at a little bit of an angle, this is in my coupe and much cheaper.

Rockauto.com has a manufacturer's closeout on "remanufactured" e21(320i) master cylinders for $18.39.
I just bought one along with an e12 slave cylinder and hydrualic hose (for 5 speed converted cars) for $48.00 total including shipping.
I don't need them at the moment and they may not be ATE brand, but at that price I'll keep them as backups in my trunk on long trips.

Thanks @HB Chris and Happy new year! This info is still helpful, 10 years after you wrote it! Especially knowing it comes from a trusted and knowledgeable source! The downside is, as you alluded, that the bolt holes on this version cause the fluid supply port to be rotated 90 degrees relative to the original unit, 2152 1100 784, on my '69 2800CS, or the replacement listed on Walloth, 2152 1104 262. Would love to see a photo of how the plumbing worked out on this unit if you have one. I'm hoping my original unit that worked fine when I tore my car down 10 years ago still works. I'm buying a rebuild kit for my original unit as plan B. This unit will be my plan C : -).
The good news for anyone in the market for this version is that options still exist from various makers & sellers for $35-68.
