New cars...maybe I don't like any of them

Been test driving entry level luxury cars recently. MY 2007 Forester XT was rear ended on the highway as I was turning left and stopped. We were extremely lucky the inattentive person did see us just in time to not kill us. The damage in the rear looks acceptably minor (bumper, hatch, tailights), except the passenger rear door has no gap between itself and the fender. Insurance company has settled with me for the huge sum of $3213.51and let me keep the car, which I am still driving for the time being (Windshield just decided to crack this week as well)
My car has some unobtanium on it, which is why I kept it. Mostly the Japanese suspension taken off a Forester STI ( A car never exported outside Japan) and the seats, steering, brakes and forged wheels from a 2004 Imprezza STI.

So I have driven the following new cars:

Audi Allroad with Sports package
Mercedes C300 Wagon with Sports pack
Mazda CX 5 Turbo
Acura RDX A spec
Subaru Outback XT

I liked the Benz (but no ground clearance), The Audi was very quiet, The Mazda was great till you pushed it (torque steer) and had a flat seat you just slid around on. The RDX was very slick but I don't want an SUV really. The Turbo Outback is ugly, and makes me feel my age, plus has a gross CVT. What I want is a taught, simple car, that has ground clearance, low weight, good torque, no torque steer, good seats, kick ass stereo. Low key looks. Something I can spill my Shwarma on and not worry. I want my STI equipped Forester rattle box back... really, seems like the best car ever made (for me at least...partly because I put it together in a tiny garage in the fall 160,000 KM ago). So much nicer steering and turn in than these new de sensitized cars, that shut their engines down at intersections. Pretty darn light, can see out of it, just the right size for one guy, some crap and his dog. I think it will take a Porsche Cayman S to get me back into caring about cars again.
I did end up buying a 2020 RDX A spec for a great price and my wife is going to get it to replace her battle wagon 2013 MDX (The last one made in Ontario). I'd check out Volvo, but not thinking I want a car made by a companv Owned by The People's Army.

Anyone have a new car they want?

There is one that I could possibly buy that I might go for figuring I could make money exporting it in a couple of years. Canada had a few C43 Mercedes wagons that were available. Next to none really. The US got zero. No one wants wagons, but I feel that in about two years SUVs will be like Ford Country Squire station wagons in 1982. Done. I'd bet you Americans would love a 380 HP AWD wagon...with a kick ass stereo that no one else has?. It would cost about $50K USD.

Wagons rule Bob! First car was an Austin Mini Countryman, the one with the wood on it. Fantastic memories, later the Mercedes 300TD wagon, the Subaru Legacy wagon, and my current DD, the BMW 528iTouring. Much prefer the wagon to any suv, just me. Doesn't look like I will change. Have had some thoughts about looking into a Ferrarai FF. ;)

before covid struck and i thought i was going to take a job that was 30 miles each way (near the ATL airport), i started thinking about parting with the 911s. the cars i looked at
Mercedes GLA 250, Alfa Romeo Giulia, Mini Cooper Countryman, Volvo XC 40 t5, and a few recently used models that are fun to drive. by the time i priced everything, what seemed to make the most sense to me was to buy a 2017 Porsche Boxster or Cayman - certified with basically the same warranty as any of the new cars and about the same price - 45k to 50k (okay, the Mini was less). yes, if you didn't want all of the options i would have elected to desire ... then all would have been less expensive.

@Nicad,

Same thing happened to my jeep. I took it to a body shop after buying it back. I asked them to get it as straight as possible for $500. It worked well and I could open the rear doors once again.

Or just find a used one of the same vintage with reasonable miles and good maintenance?
My other problem is I am not thinking thinking I would be able to insure a Forester with modified steering brakes and suspension. . There were a few Forester XT's with 5 speed manuals in the US and Canada but they are as rare as manual tranny BMW 3 series wagons . There is a rusty and slammed 08 in Saskatchewan, and that is about all I have found in the last month. Did find this site for exporting Japanese STI Foresters.

I wonder if it could be practically converted to left hand drive? Change dash, steering column, headlights? Probably not.

It is very easy to bring in a car to Canada if it is over 15 years old.
Newer than that. I brought an 06 MDX up from Ohio in 07' My 99' Miata is from Dallas 12 years ago and also brought up a 98 M3 17 years ago from Wisconsin. One of the only ones you absolutely cannot bring up is a Lotus Elise. My Coupe came from Idaho. I love shopping in the US when our dollar is worth something. Not quite like that now.

There are 5-6 XTs for sale on CL in the Bay Area (San Francisco)

Thanks Tferrer. Will give it a look. Very hard to find a stock one. let alone a manual. I prefer the 06-08 versus the earlier ones.

Thought this was quite humourous...and accurate.

Very funny and informative! I always thought that the LGBT thing was a cliche. I wasn’t paying attention at the time to know that it was a targeted ad campaign.

My outback is a workhorse! Kind of want a forester after watching that!

That is absolutely the best looking Outback past or present. I had an 05 Legacy GT wagon for a while when they came out, then my wife said she wanted a third row and have had an MDX ever since. Kids now gone, downsizing to an A Spec RDX tomorrow. First car we have leased. I find the new Outback pretty darn Ugly with the cladding and angles but might buy one anyway. Do you have snow tires or need them in PNW?

Yes I bought my 2009 in late 2009. I wanted a new one but the “ugly” 2010’s were already out. I could only find an 2009 ex-rental with 13K. I figured who beats up on an outback? :) I wanted a 2.5XT but the closest I could find was a new UPS brown one in Denver.

You can do without snow tires here if you have AWD. During hazardous conditions the mountain passes require AWD or chains. You can also run studs legally here, and Subaru’s are an unstoppable force on studded snow tires.

I haven’t had the need however. Everything shuts down in Seattle after about 1”. I find myself making excuses to go the grocery store just to drive in deep snow. I do go skiing when it snows but it is a 2 lane road. Due to traffic, I can’t maximize my tires even if I wanted to.

I absolutely love deep snow in my car and I hit some of the worst weather imaginable 2 Hours North of the city on a weekly basis. Buy new snows every other year and have a ready market for the old ones (Blizzak WS 80 most recently). When I bought my first Legacy wagon (a 1995 5 speed) Toronto experienced the worst snow storm on record (Winter 99'). It snowed 5 feet in about ten days. They sent in the Army, which still causes ridicule for Toronto Nation wide. During that period the Subie was my first ever experience with AWD. We had brand new Michelin snow tires. I went out to a parking lot doing donuts, etc. when a police cruiser pulled in. The only time I have run from the Police. It was so easy. They would have needed a ski doo to catch me. I also don't bother plowing the driveway at the country place we rent. Just bang my way over the snow bank and go back and forth for ten minutes till it is packed down. My biggest winter problem with the Forester is that snow packs in my BBS STI rims and makes them unbalanced. I usually have to go to a coin wash and blast them out.
