New Original Tires

I had a 1978 beetle last year, the tyres were not original but I think from the 1980’s. They had no noticeable wear.
When I got it running and with an mot I tried brake testing it and could lock up the fronts on a dry road with no significant slowing down, they were like driving on steel wheels. Never tried the cornering test as I didn’t fancy crash testing it. I quickly sold it. When I sent it to the new owner I included 5 never fitted tyres that were also not date coded, so pretty old. I expect the new owner will never fit them, he never thanked me for the extra gift

A friend just got Pirelli tires that are a reproduction of an original tire on a 2002 Tii. These were for his 72 Tii.
Good performance compared to 3 others. Says 13-15" sizes. Look very classic/original.

Every tii that I've ever seen that Maxie Hoffman brought in ran Michelin XAS's. Dunno about rest-of-world destinations. That said, the CN36's now on my 2002 are excellent.

Tom has them on his Tii with all original stock wheels and beautiful polished caps. Guess you haven't see yet since he brought the 356 last Sunday.

When it comes to true Concours, most recognize that safety is a major consideration. The MBCA runs a true concours and they allow seatbelts and third brake lights in a 50s 300sl. I don’t believe they are concerned with period correct date codes. The BMW CCA certainly isn’t.

Chris - Watching an old episode of Jay Leno's garage, I recall listening him praising MB for their support for their old cars. (Needless to say, he hit a nerve.) According to Jay, you can source tires for classic MB cars from MB.

Here are the original tires out of the plastic.

I bought my new 2002 on May 31,1972. The spare tire is still in the trunk--a 165SR13 Michelin XAS tube-type tire. I still have the innertubes and the 4 -1/2" wide steel wheels up in the attic. Why? I'll never know...
