I'm new to the e9 but not to BMW's.
A few newbie questions:

What would be considered a deal breaker for rust issues? I'm OK with a welder, but I understand some areas are not accessible.

Under Tech info there is a price range for different levels of condition dated 2007. How much have these prices changed since then?

Any advice for someone who wants to spend no more than 8-10K and is not afraid of getting dirty?

Thanks

For most E9s I see, the deal-breaking rust is usually the structural kind. This usually means a 4-alarm rocker problem (so through all three layers), shock tower rust, or engine bay rain channel rust. Most of the other common rust issues (so pretty much the rest of the car ) are cosmetic, so the car won't fall apart when you are driving. Those key structural areas need the strength, though, so rust there is very bad and very difficult to properly repair without some form of chassis jig to properly load the frame during the repair process.

$8k-$10k will be a project car for sure. Here's a thread you may find helpful:

The topic of pricing on these cars comes up often. Here is the most recent discussion:

What are the goals for your project ? Father-son project ? Daily driver ? Pebble Beach ?

Thanks, lots of good info here.

My goal is a very nice ocassional #2 driver.

I saw a 9K 3.0 CS all original with what I thought was a significant amount of rust. The area that bothered me most was the forward rocker area. I did not remove the rocker cover, but the rust had come thru the cover and rotted the first few inches of it away. The floor pans had started to rust thru also. Shock towers looked fine. Another area of concern was an old respray. My paint gauge showed some areas that had alot of filler. I'm afraid I would find some nasty surprises when I removed the paint. Surprisingly, the interior leather seats were pretty good. The wood trim was delaminating. All rubber seals/window gaskets dry and cracked and need replacing.

This seems a high price to pay for a car in this condition.
