Hi,

When installing this do you need to change the radiator? I am told that I do but I have done the conversion before without doing so although it is a tight fit.

Regards,

Rohan

Same here ... kept the original radiator, but there is indeed not much room between radiator and fan, nor is there much space between the tip of the blades and underside of the bonnet (a few cm)!!

so if this is your waist size, don't even lean on your bonnet?

Because the fan mounts on the back of the clutch, you can put a couple of washers between the fan and clutch at each of the mounting bolts, gaining a few precious millimetres clearance at the radiator.

To gain a small amount of extra clearance, one can also install one of the later style single nut viscous fan clutches/water pumps from the later BMW's such as the ones from the E24 6 series. Should be a direct bolt on if I'm not mistaken.

Just a word of caution! Make sure your motor mounts are in good condition, otherwise during a hard braking, weak motor mounts will cause the engine to lurch forward, thus the fan assembly will undoubtedly slam into the radiator, causing major damage to it.

That is the same reasoning the radiator shop gave me when he recommended not using a three row core instead of the standard two row when he re-cored my radiator.

You can gain about 1/2" of clearance by cutting up the rubber blocks in the radiator mounts so the radiator is spaced forward.
