Guys, car has been disassembled for some time . From memory, this part was under the rubber engine mount RHS ( ?) . It appears to be some sort of spacer ( sorry, no pun intended ). Does anyone know what it's for and if there's supposed to be one on the other side too ?..it's about 5mm thick . Cheers, Simon

PS. '74 csi if that's significant IMG_00000547.jpg

Please post a picture including DQ's finger so we know the scale.

Don't know what the part is but I know that is not DQs thumb.

hmmm the pictured part is quite clean for a car that's decades old and lived under an engine mount (usually a pretty dirty place). Might not be an original part, in which case no one would know the true use.

Could it be a custom washer to raise the engine for some reason? Or, it could be that the top or bottom plate of the engine mount itself. This plate has a hole for the center bolt and an offset hole for the rubber protrusion (to orient it correctly i believe).

Thanks guys , not sure if such a part is found on LHD cars but maybe for RHD it changes the engine angle slightly to enhance clearance(s) of exhaust manifold from steering box etc ?

I doubt the engine angle changes between LHD and RHD. This would also then tilt the gearbox and its mounting tabs

If you installed new engine mounts then just add the "washer" to your collection of leftover parts (we all have boxes of those) ;)

after speaking to a BMW mechanic, it appears this spacer does adjust the engine angle for RHD cars ..."when driven hard, the exhaust manifold is prone to hitting the knuckle on the steering box "...hence the spacer for additional clearance . Here endeth the lesson .
