I was hoping to start out with a report on my partial disassembled coupe but while I’m readying it for a slight bit of paint work a question came up so I guess the report will have to wait till this weekend. The trunk lid sits too high even after some diligent bending of the hinges so I was preparing to bend the lid and or the rain gutter area on the tops of the quarters. My good friend is panicking & saying I have the wrong rubber gasket sealing the trunk and it’s causing the lid to sit too high. He feels it should be a “glue into the channel type” not the “push onto the edge type” shown in the photo ? Thoughts please  before I may make a mess of things. THANKS in advance ~ John Buchtenkirch

You have generic gasket material. The OEM gasket sits low against the body and up against the lip, almost like a U on its side, with a very small piece extending over the lip. The main section needs to be glued in place, the little lip does not. Wish I had a good photo.

I agree with the above posts having just replaced my trunk gasket with a factory gasket that was worth the extra $$s. Mine did NOT look in any way like yours.

Material

I posted two good shots of my trunk on the "tool orientation" thread. This is new material from Carl N.....starting to become too good of a friend! He has the right stuff...

It's a thick gasket that fills up the entire channel around the base of the trunk.

Thanks guys, I have put away my big dead blow hammer and blocks of soft pine I use for aligning panels. Who or what  business is Carl N ? He sounds like someone or a business I should be knowing about. ~ John Buchtenkirch

Has anybody found an alternate gasket that does not lay in the channel and that is small enough to work in the restricted space? The original gasket is a poor design in that it traps dirt and water in the channel. I have not glued mine (original style) in place so that I can pull it up to clean and dry, if needed.

I do the same thing for the trunk and hood gaskets - remove them before washing the car and drying everything before they go back in.
