I found a company R.L. Polk that has the information on how many coupes are registered here in the States. Here's the catch, it's $500 to get the information. I wasn't that interested.

If anyone wants to, the person to contact is Michelle at 248 728 7338

Common Michelle, don't tell me, but is it more than a thousand?

Well how much info is provided for that $500 just a raw number? I mean I understand they probably can't or won't provide a lot of personal information but if they could break it down by year and specific CS model (ie; CS, CSI, CSL) and also break it down geographically it might be worth it (if everyone chipped in a few bucks).

My estimate: Free... Based on production numbers and assumed attrition rates slightly in excess of the norm (due to the tin worm factor), is:
2375 coupes world wide.

This breaks down as follows:

1968 8
1969 216
1970 358
1971 333
1972 534
1973 511
1974 246
1975 170

Total 2375

This is an analytical model, so it is subject to some error, but, on average, I suspect it is pretty accurate.

I was alittle surprised buy the paucity of the numbers, but then I found that thereare, like 2 in Scotland and 5 in the UK, so it may be optimistic!

I suspect 20% of the total remaining are in CA...We had 15 of them in PA a couple of months ago...nearly 1% of the worldwide population!

Anything before 1974 they cannot break down into matching model with the year, just how many.

$500 was the minimum for any data. If you spent more then they would give more detailed information. Mine was not the first inquiry about a specific make of car.

Scott's free analysis works fine for me.

Isn't there an online registry for e9's?

Or a completely different way to count:

3 cars a week on ebay and 52 weeks in a year and five years that I have been watching ebay!

3x52x5=780

There are 780 Coupes in the US.

Interesting, but doesn't his assume that EVERY coupe turns over on average every 5 years? And, in the 5 years, by my model, the overall population has declined by over 1000 vehicles.. so I am not sure this is an accurate way to estimate.

BTW, we could proobably find out hwo many coupes were IMPORTED to the US, and then use that percentage in the population model.

There was one here at e9coupe.com (at previous version of the page). I am planning to make a register for e9 cars at the end of 2007, but if there is serious interest from e9 owners, then I can start a register in 2006 august.

I think the register format of e12.de looks great, so something like that can be done.

Ayup. That would be the BMW CS Registry.

All the production numbers are there for the US and RoW.

The registry per se is not online, but Art Wegweiser is the keeper, and he could give us a count of registered cars, I'm sure.

The US e9 import numbers:

2800CS = 841 per BMW, 641 per Karmann
2800CSA = 526
3.0CS = 1368
3.0CSA = 1189

So at most, 3924 cars officially imported to the US, or about 12% of total production.

Yeah, but there are a ton of grey market vehicles. Mine was brought over by an individual in the late 80s, based on the paperwork that came with the car.

As I recall, there were quite a few Euro coupes in the US, based on the pictures from the old board.

bmwcsregistry.org is only an info website of the bmw cs registry club, there are no public e9 registry info on the side (like vin number - color - year - modell - etc of the cars in the club)

Yes, you should reinstitute the registration page.

A ton of E-9's?

Lets see--@ 2,600 to 3100# each--a ton=about 2/3 of a CS--seriously-- we just don't have a clear idea of the surviving CS's that remain whether imported and landed by Hoffman Motors Corp--the predecessor to BMWNA--that total number is accurately stated as one of the numbers given above.

But I do not believe there have been huge number of Euro CS. CSi and CSL's brought to these shores--possibly a few hundred and they by enthusiasts who seem to find their way to this site.

Using my model, 8% of the total vehicles built are still around. This means that, using the US numbers we have 3924*.08=305 US coupes left.

I would hazard a guess that the "tons of grey markey cars" was about 500 max, of which we would have 40 left (using the same 8%).

This puts the US total at a pretty paltry 360 coupes!

Yikes! I'm glad I have one!

Scott,

Are assuming an exponential decay? What are the details of your decay factor? At the tail end of this curve, does this include something that reflects the number of marginal examples sacrificed to restore one of our cars?

Thanks,
David

If you look at how many coupes have been used as parts cars, TJ and I have parted 2 coupes for spares as have just about anyone who has done a restoration, I am sure Carl Nelson and Coupe king , Ben Miller and Dan K have parted a fair few on our behalf. So I would say Scotts estimate should be somewhat accurate. Specially with the POS we see coming up on EBay I would say 200 Clean coupes in the US.

I would think that the 200-300 number for remaining cars is fairly accurate. There are 260+ members of this board. Allowing for non-US members and assuming that 80% of the members own driveable cars, and then assuming there are perhaps 50 owned by non-members, this seems like a reasonable range.

Non-scientific, and assumes most US owners find their way here, but another approach that ends up in the same ballpark......
