Odd under carriage in this example, no spare wheel holder, is this original ?

captured a pic today of undercarriage

in the place of the spare wheel, I found that the body is different….

Well for sure it is hand made, as the edges of the are square, and welded. It is not a press formed (from one sheet) metal part.

Not sure what the function is, or when it would have been installed. Wild guess: Perhaps as a battery tray?
 
Perhaps it was welded by Edward Fox for smuggling his rifles in the Day of the Jackal.
A back up plan in case the Alfa would not start?
The guy did a full repaint with a blue spray can in an hour, imagine what he could do welding.
