Off Gassing

There is one more place to look in addition to what you have found. My U.K. car has a fuel breather that comes out under the rear bumper. I believe that US cars have a carbon filter that the breather is attached to. If that breather pipe is decayed then it allows smell into the boot (trunk for you guys over the pond) rather than below the car. I would also check it while doing the gasket.
