Oil pan on a s38

The early e24 pan works and is better than e9 because of the baffles.
A little bit lower than an e9 pan.
Easy to spot because of the side mount oil level unit.

Ok thnx! A friend is going first with his e9 to swap a s38 into it. I'll post some pics if he let me ;)

Mich, yes! Please do post pictures and project details. I would be very interested in learning more about the S38 swap. Much appreciated - especially details similar to this - oil pan etc...

I have also read that the E28 S38 pan will work. At least I hope so since that is what I am using.

This link is to pictures of Terry Sayther's CSL with S38. The last pictures shows the underside of the engine. Looks like the same pan as the E28 M5 S38 I have. http://www.flickr.com/photos/sayther/sets/72157626485152233/page2/

See these links for more S38 swap info.

oil pan

You can use the S38 oil pan and pump but you will have to lower the front sway bar by sinking it into the front frame rails, that will lower it enough that the oil pan will clear it by about 10mm. That's how I did mine, as I'm firm about having a much oil capacity and baffeling as the original M5 had. I have to believe that the extra effort is worth it. Good Luck, Leroy

Sorry…... but I am confused by your description. The frame rails (actually uni-body rails) are above the sway bar so sinking the bar into the rails would actually be raising it. Were you able to drop it into the engine / suspension cross-member somehow ? There is very little distance between the sway bar and the front strut rod bushing. Could you post a photo ? Thank you ~ John Buchtenkirch

Look at the last pictures in this set. The sway bar mounts on top of the subframe.

oil pan

Sorry about that, I should have written subframe rails. Yes the sway bar mounts on top of the subframe rails, in front of where it mates to the unibody frame rails. Interferance with the sway bar is the only problem with the S38 oil pan. There is even space to mount the engine further to the rear, but then major surgery on the firewall would come into play. If I can get my son to help me I'll try to post a couple of pictures this afternoon. Leroy

Thnx, Jon and Leroy. Looking forward to see the picture Leroy.

I know that Ireland produces sway bars for 02 that mount under the subframe instead of at the top (same place as on an e9). Maybe that will clear the issue? Anybody using the ireland swaybars under his e9?

sway bar pics

Here' a couple of pics of how I did it.
