Oil pressure tell tale warning light

Does anyone know how to test whether the warning sensor is faulty or whether there is a more serious problem?

Oil light comes on when running, and I have checked that the oil level is correct.

Have had this problem before due to long period of inactivity...it turned out to be the sensor and not the pump - unfortunately it was a mechanic that found it and I am none the wiser.

Manual only describes how to remove & reinstall the pump but makes no reference to the sensor.

Any ideas?

Cheers

How about installing a gauge? I put one on my Bav and it is much more comforting actually knowing what the pressure is.

VDO troubleshooting, i.e oil pressure sender

You should be able to test the sender. Engine off the sender terminal should show a ground. ( light off) Engine on with oil pressure, the sender should read to infinity. If this checks out, there's something along the wire or at the guage that's not connected.

Visually, open the oil cap... engine on.... if you see oil everywhere you just might need to change that sender.

If you have a guage...... or go buy a sender for a guage... you can read your oil pressure....

Sender Testing:

Senders can be tested with an ohm meter that measures from 10 to 2,000 ohms.
Connect the positive lead from the tester to the sender terminal and the negative lead to a good ground. The following readings will occur if the sender is operating properly:

Temperature Sender: Cold - 700 ohms
Hot (250 degrees) - 22 ohms

Pressure Sender: Engine off - 10 ohms
Engine running 40 psi = 105 ohms;
60 psi = 152 ohms.

Fuel Sender*: Tank empty - 10 ohms; full - 180 ohms
*If the fuel gauge reads backwards, but accurate, the float arm has been installed from left to right into the pivot. Reinstall from right to left. Using a VDO 10-180 ohm gauge with a 240-33 ohm

It's been a million years since I actually took a motor apart on one of these, but I remember the oil rail bolts for the cams being one of the first things I would check.
