after my broken-bolt victory today i decided to pull the oil pan (while the engine was on a stand). everything looked decent save about an inch of slack in the oil pump chain. is this normal? is there a way to tighten the chain (shims?) or since a new one only costs a few bucks should i go that route?

oil pump chain slack

I don't think I need to consult the manual to know 1" slack is too much. Sight unseen, 1/2" deflection with thumb pressure is probably maximum.

Yes there are shims available to take up the tension. Another possibility is replace the chain. If you do not wish to touch the pump, a chain with a master link is available. Unfortunately, with a new chain but old crank sprocket, you are a candidate for a new wear pattern.

Good luck.

oil chain

I don't think you can to shim an inch of slack from the chain... get another. they last a long time. Check the sprocket for wear while you're in there.

Also, if you ever noticed that your oil pressure idiot light doesn't go out soon after a start, this would be a good time to consider a newer pump.

is there a better candidate for oil pumps than others? should i stick with a late 80's 535 model?

also, with a new chain and new bearings, is not replacing the drive gear asking for trouble?

don't know myself whether one pump is better than another

there are differences though.

I would say, the original pump lasted xx years, the replacement will go at least that long and probably longer since I don't drive the coupe as much as the previous owners might have. How old would I be when this pump is as old as the first? Will there still be gasoline then?
