Please forgive my ignorance, but why some E9s have the oil tank filler neck close to the radiator but some close to the firewall?
Is there any difference?

Both cars are model year 1973 3.0 CS

there really is no “oil tank” as such on an m30 engine. A car that has an oil tank would most likely be what is called dry sump. Meaning the oil is stored in another location other than the oil pan. The oil fill for the engine can vary from car to car as bmw made a variety of different rocker covers for the m30 engines in these cars. The m30 had a tremendous life span in use from the late sixties through the early 90s. Many rocker covers are interchangeable and have been switched either with an engine swap or by them selves. There are many knowledgeable individuals connected with this site who can tell you which is appropriate for each specific model and year.

at least until 73, oil filling hole is front

there is no difference in performance,
and no difference at all in filling oil at the front or at rear, oil goes to the same place
