I should be over most of the oldies, but goodies, by now, but one still bothers me. About 16-17 years ago, I flew to Princeton, NJ to look at a Chamonix with red 72(?) 3.0cs in a snowstorm. Saw the ad in Hemmings (Pre-Bay). Guy that ran a trucking company that had a car collection, and the coupe was one of the last he was disposing of. Seems like it had less than 50K miles, as he trucked it to their FL home, drove it around, and trucked it back. It was in the back of a semi trailer, and we couldn't get it to crank. Wanted around $13K for it. I flew back home and my dad had a massive stroke that day; that was kinda the end of story, as we had more important isssues for some time. I called a year or so later, and was told the trucking company was out of business. Just curious if anyone here might have bought the car either in NJ or FL. If it is someone here, I still have a great picture (somewhere...) It was totally original, except his wife had slightly bumped the front at some time in FL. Better to have loved and lost....Dave V. in NC

Hi Dave,

After reading your first few sentences, I too had a sense of deja vu of my past love. I think we both had lusted after this very same beautiful creation.

It was late 1991 or early 1992, picked up a copy of Hemmings Motor News and saw the ad for a 1972 chamonix with red interior CS coupe. Intrigued, I called the gentlemen in New Jersey about the car. He stated that the car was part of a car collection that he was disposing and this coupe had been in storage for the previous 10 to 15 years. The car was all original with about 30,000 miles with the ridiculous low asking price then of $18,000. He also sent me some pictures of that fabulous conditioned car. The photos validated the described condition of the coupe. It looked totally brand new.

This was also the time when a redheaded 1988 M6 drewed my attention at a local San Francisco dealer in also new condtition. The car had 25,000 miles and the asking price $30,000. My heart was torn between these opposite coast beauties. I thought long and hard and finally chosed the redheaded M6 since at that time I was already driving a decent shaped Malaga 72 3.0 CS.

It has been been a long 16, 17 years since, but I liked you Dave have wondered what could have been had I aquired this CS beauty. I did not get my next 3.0 CSi until 2002 but in no way does my present coupe matched up with that gorgeous beauty. About 6 or 7 years ago in Hemmings, a 1972 chamonix coupe with red interior with low mileage was for sale for about $25,000 somewhere in Texas, my inclinations leave me to believe this was the very same love that got away from us years ago. Hopefully, the present owner is pampering this gorgeous creation like it deserves.

I have the old photos also. Unfortunately, can't seem to find them at the moment, but I'll post them when they're found.

Hey Stan, that's exactly the way I remembered her except she was outfitted with the factory 5 spoked alloys.

pretty girl....

Murray always calls the B'max by the masculine. One of the few things that I will argue with him. That's a really pretty lady, Stan. The January calendar girl? I assume your photo is to remind, and not the NJ car?. As Bert said, about the way I remember her, as well, except for the Nardi and the Mappa Burl...and the wheels; those do look great. We'd love to see you at Vintage at the Vinyards in May in NC.

Bert, I felt confirmed that someone besides me, thought that on this car, Chamonix was more of her stage name, than a color of white paint. I always rationalized that if the car would have started, and my dad stayed healthy, that my ex-wife would currently be mowing down mailboxes with its rusty carcass; and thus it was all for the better.

I finally bought my first (and current) coupe in April of '04 after a couple of false starts that didn't work out. Soon thereafter, I bought a (drum-roll please...) 72 Chamonix with red automatic runner as a maybe/parts car. Totally complete. Just enough rust to tease me. I do have a spare nose, and a couple of front fenders...With business the way it is, it will probably just remain a lightly crusty white car. But she might possibly again be Chamonix. Just like a Disney cartoon, on one shoulder, the angel says she can be pretty again, but the devil on the other shoulder says he only needs the Amex card for five minutes....Maybe I shouldn't look for that photo on the side of the road in the NJ farm land circa 1992. Thanks for the little trip back. Dave V. in NC

Carpathian Elm burl. One of the few restoration projects I did myself.
Since then I have restored the tail light reflectors and am working on the elephant skin in the trunk.
