Old Video of the Factory MotorSport Race team and the CSL

Really cool video, and a surprise to see the sidecar rigs. Now if only I knew more than 5 or 10 words in German...

What's that gizmo on the CS' rollbar above the driver?

Did someone stuff the CS at 12:26 just as they pass the carnival ride?

That was an excellent film. I loved being able to hear the cars as they blazed by. It is one thing to see all these lovely pictures of the cars, but to hear them at full wick is something I never thought I'd be able to do, given the rarity of footage from the era.

I also thought it was hilarious how their racing car had all the chrome and a full driver door panel with wood, as well as a full dash. It's like a slap in the face of the competition.

As for the device on the rollbar, based on the plug shape, I'm going to guess it is a helmet radio connector.

W'ere always looking out for cool early BMW stuff and will put anything we find on the site.

We are all massive CSL enthusiasts and Barney, who is at the end of the phone, grew up with CSL's

We have a great relationship with BMW Classic and are there a few times a year, we also look after some amazing cars.

I'll try and post some more pictures up.

I'm also working on some new CSL mechandise.

How about some blueprints, or other design documentation? (I doubt they used real cyanotype blueprints by that time, but you know what I mean) I'd love to hang a replica orthogonal/isometric exterior draft on my wall.

How to be unpopular in 5 minutes - Lesson #1:

I am sorry to say this, but there is nothing new about this video. It was available since like 5-10 years, and I am sure that lots of csl lovers already have a digital copy of this video.

Lots of parts can be seen in bmw related tv shows, art car presentation from bmw, etc.

I am already very bored to say this :

- can we see some new, unreleased csl/race car periodic video material, please ?

- can I ask to stop acting like "wow, I had found the ultimate new csl video!" when the video material is very well know by lots of people, please ?

My definition of 'excellent' is a little different. If you look at this video, generally this style of video - well until the begining of the 80's it was done / directer / filmed /whatever usually with one guy. There is an article about him in ... i think one of the german sport auto magazine (sorry I am not at home to check his name).

These videos (the csl videos, the bmw motorsport junior team training and bmw e21 320i race reports, etc) are containing of some bits of the events, and the director decided to put more 'art' into the videos, insteading of correctly documenting all the facts and happening at the races.

As I don't beleive (at this point) that some really new, factory made material will be released - as there were like 4-5 videos like this from 1973 to 1981 - it is clear that there weren't any real excellent videos made by bmw.

Excellent for me would mean the following:

- Quality recording: even the original video (before the compression) look like a super 8 video with very low resolution (lph). In the seventies there were lots of camera / celluloid films to make quality picture, so it would be possible to 'scan' them in 2k or 3k resolution (it is happening now when you buy a blu ray version of your 70's and 80's film).

- Quality sound: the videos have very bad quality sound, like a cellphone

- Correct development, preparation, race documentation for every cs/csl race car about every race, every day (slalom, etcc, targa florio, rallye, etc), with minimum 30-40 minutes 'in race' video and some onboard video (and not just putting 2-3 camera to different static places)

I think the misconception of 'excellent' came from the fact that some cs owner didn't know about this very-very-very-very well known video. Beleiving that no csl race video were made by bmw, and then seeing one or two is a big step. But in reality, if you want to see the whole scene, and if want to get real quality, detailed document about this era, then it will be clear that there is none.

In my opinion the reason that these videos were made is not that bmw want to document everything correctly in great quality, but making some video material for _MARKETING_ reason. As we know, marketing doesn't car about the documentation, they only want to show the strenght of a product (for ex your 3.0 cs roadcar came from a real csl race car, same breed, etc), and SELL.

So it clearly show how bmw think about the whole 70' and 80's. All they care is sell new cars with the support of MARKETING. Nothing has change in the past 30-40 years.

My expectations were very low. Like you said, I had never seen a video of the racers at all, so something was a vast improvement. I did think the quality was a little "home movies", and it was clearly a marketing tool, but it is better than nothing.

If you had already seen it,then don't watch it.Some of us had not seen it and don't want to spend hours searching the internet.Just easier to post a link and you can click on it or not.No big friggin deal. You yourself stated there is no new Factory CSL material to view.So like the other guy said,it may not be the best video ever made but it is better than nothing!!

Anyone have any never before released Monthy Python and the Fying Circus footage? Now that would be incredible! Cheers Mike, and thanks for registering both of your beautiful coupes.

Chris

Mapgando, thanks for posting this footage. Neat to see the old bimmers sliding all over the place.

Feri, for perspective, I was about 5 years old when this footage was shot, and the only racing near me in Virginia was on a short oval. The nearest BMW dealer was about 100 miles away. CSLs, for road or race, are rare as hen's teeth here in the US, so for a lot of us this type of footage is new and exciting. NASCAR dominates here, so we didn't grow up with this type of racing.

It is too bad that better footage than this does not exist, but so it goes...

Scott

There is quite a lot of film existing from this time, but often it is subject to copyrights so is not easy to find.
I know of one film made of the `74 factory CSL`s that has never been seen by anyone except the maker. i am trying to change that.

I guess we should have one of the mods post a new sticky that says, before posting any videos on this forum, please run it past feri first and if he has seen it, then don't post it. To hell with the rest of us. Sheeesh, feri, are you really that self-centered?

I couldn't agree more. Please, oh please, oh please, can you stop posting thing's that other members may have seen before. Before doing so,

1) Scour the entire internet to make sure that the content does not exist anywhere else.

2) Check this forum to make sure it has not been posted before - this actually goes for everything, questions, images, media, I MEAN EVERYTHING.

3) Contact me to make sure i don't have a copy on any of the several computers i may be using at any given time... including mobile devices.

Anyone would think this was a community of people who come together and share their thoughts, idea's and content relating to their beloved e9's. Pfffft.

And finally, if you do happen to find any footage, even though it may be from the 70's, before you post, can you please make sure that the video and sound quality are up to present day standards. And also check that i haven't seen it before.

Thank you.

Thank you.

In '96 the historics at Monterey featured BMW, and BMW NA came out with just about all the works race cars ...several significant privateer cars were there too, for the race the CSLs were in, I was inside the cyclone fence just a-ways from the inside of turn 2... BATS 3-abreast through that near-hairpin throttling down from full bore. I won't post moving pictures...but if you like I DO have an "archive-quality" still some girl took of the big wet spot on my jeans

Maybe time for a video link archive. Guys like feri will have lots to share.

Thanks for the original post. I've seen it before, but enjoyed it again nonetheless.
