Went to see some items of an auction last weekend.
I noticed a coupe with the following VIN number: 2200014.
Off course I don't need to point out the fact what is special about this number.
Has someone seen an older one, or could this be "the oldest one around"?
Would have been the oldest one on the CS Registry if I looked correctly.

I wasn't able to take a pic to prove the above information (but the number was so striking and easy to remember...)

Curious to hear your experience regarding ("special") VIN numbers of the coupe heritage.

I have 2270011 which was the car Max H. took to American car shows to introduce the 6-cylinder cars to the market in Fall 1968. Its the earliest 227xxxx car I know of, I have no insight into whether the euro VINs (220xxxx) are considered "older", nor have I contacted BMW-AG to find out what date their records say it was built or delivered.

There were 138 euro 2800Cs 4 speeds built in 1968 starting with 2200001 so 2200014 would be the earliest so far. The US 2800CS was not produced until 1969 with 43 4 speeds built that year. The earliest in the Registry is 2270013 on 9/1/69 and Murray's 2270016 is 9/5/69. Andreas reported that 2270001 was built 12/4/69 which doesn't make much sense but VINs were not truly consecutive. But, I have never seen one more that one month out of sequence which does happen and I have a large spreadsheet on US VINs.

Dale, you should contact Andreas for your build date to confirm 1968 vs. 1969 debut in the US. Pretty awesome to have an actual Hoffman show car, it would be even more awesome to find some auto show pictures from that era. Someone must have something but it would be like finding the needle in the haystack I think.

one of the latest 2800csa/usa vin numbers?

Chris,

i have a question for the other end of the spectrum. i have a february 26, '71 build - VIN 2280487. as far as i can tell from looking in the registry, its the highest number of 2800 csa/usa listed. so here's the question ... the chart says 526 2800 csa/usa ... which would mean that 39 additional csa/usa cars would have been built by the end of march. do we know for sure that the serial numbers for 2800 csa/usa goes to 2280526?

i looked up 2280001 - the listing says its a 71 ... which seems wrong to me. the next listing is 2280006, which is listed as a '70 model. so here's my second question ... if there were 36 '69 builds ... are we sure that they started with 228xxxx ... or do we think that the 06 car was just titled in '70?

my curiousity with this is - how near to the production end is my car.

Scott,

There were 526 US automatics built with the last one built on 3/23/71 so you are within one month or so.

Many owners assume their registration year is the correct one but not necessarily. 2280001 is a 1970, not 71. In the registry 2280006 was built 9/1/69 but is still considered a '70 in the US as the DOT/EPA regs required the builder to comply with federal regulations in place for each model year. This is not how it was done for euro coupes obviously. Even BMW says 2280001 was built 10/20/69.

There were only 641 4speeds, last one was built 3/26/71. After March '71 there was a gap before 3.0 US coupes started production, both 4 speed and auto. Euro coupes filled in this gap. 2240001 was built 5/1/71 but production didn't really begin until July for the 4 speeds. 2240007 was built 7/26/71. The first auto US coupe 2250001 was 11/9/71 some were built before this date including 2250013 on 10/27/71 and 2250036 on 10/14/71 so Sep/Oct was the real start.
