When taken apart, the gasket went behind the badge, then badge to chrome/alum surround. Why no gasket behind the surround ? Is there anything between the surround and the actual paint of the car? Nothing on OEM but I dont trust the accuracy in thses situations.

last time i replaced these i included a circular rubber piece that accomodates between paint and metal frame, it is hand made from a 1mm rubber mat, it had worked very well during three years

I actually placed a blob of strip caulk behind it so it is off the paint by a mm or so. Strip caulk also goes around all 4 holes to make it water tight.
