Was the block painted semigloss black? Can't find any details but that's my guess.

Semi-gloss is good--
We have had good results from the brand--Orlac semi-gloss--for engine blocks and most undercarriage black parts--it's very close to original--easy to use and fast drying.
Not sure where it is available at retail but--Google--Hub auto Supply, Costa Mesa, CA--I think they may carry it in rattle can.
