So when I recently got my old L back, included in the spares were 2 old Petri horn buttons. Both made in West Germany and seemingly the same.

After spending some time cleaning them up, I noticed slight but distinct differences with them.

First, the material surround on one had a finer, more glossy finish. The mettalic inner ring was also higher gloss and lastly, the font was slightly different, perhaps just a little bit bigger. The "less glossy" version has a 3 cast into the rear whereas the other has a 7.

It's no big deal but I thought I'd just ask you resident wheel experts for discussion sake - @Markos @Hans W. @Keshav what you thought. I was under the obviously incorrect assumption they were all the same.

My take:
Both buttons are essentially the same, one older than the other. I think if you were to polish the base on the matt one some more (you’d be surprised how much muck will come off even when you think it’s all clean, abrasive polish will do the job) as when they were new, it will get shinier and smoother. The font of the buttons are production differences. Then there was a late production type that Infact has a chrome ring instead of the matt finish and a shiny base unlike the majority have. I believe I sent one of the new shiny type to @nosmonkey some years ago. Didn’t say made in West Germany if I recall.
Added pic of a NOS old type of button and a newer type but with an Alpina button instead. Both are Petri horn buttons.

Thanks, Keshav. Those differences were after some pretty serious buffing with some medium compound and polish. The one button wasn't getting any glossier at all. Makes sense, ones just older than the other.

Thanks for the input!

Yes they both look legit to me. The one on the left looks more like what I would expect to see. It’s possible that the one on the right was pieced together.

Have a close look at the numbers at the backside. One says 3 and one says 7, so they are different.

The Petri buttons came in several different shapes and colors.

Different shades of blue and shiney rings or matte rings;

With and without 'made in West-Germany' and different in ground contacts;
