How does one tell if the transmission that is in the car is the actual original transmission? And where do you find the stamped number on the Getrag?

Well that saved me some time looking for a number that's not even there, thank you. No wonder it's not really discussed much or on the Cert. of Auth. Thanks for the 411. Not just American cars though..... Porsche has matching numbers. Not the same numbers like BMW which was smart, but they tell you the number to the original motor, chassis, and trans, see attached. I also like that they tell you all the options, I hope BMW is able to give out more info like this on the certs some day for those of us that don't have original window sticker, which I assume is most. And maybe they will give out the number of cars that were produced each year in a particular color someday . I emailed the gal that helped with the cert at BMW Archives and they won't give out that information. That would be awesome. Maybe if more people request that information they will have an intern work on it or something.

At least one can tell from the VIN if it was an auto or stick shift car.

Can't do that on American cars w/o typically a buildsheet, protecto-plate, fender tag, etc., which often are missing.

Shane,

It's not a case of won't, for Hoffman cars they can't, he had that data and it's long gone. And everything was microfiched, there is no way to sort, it would all need to be digitized.
