We are to shortly repaint our restored E9. I am wondering if anyone has any information on how the original car was painted. We know the suspension was black, the engine bay painted with the exterior colour. We are uncertain about areas that are not visible, underneath the car and interior bits like floor pans, interior door skins etc. Malc has given us some info regarding what may have been a factory or dealer sprayed undercoating. Our car display(ed) what appeared to be a khaki or light brown primer in many areas.

If any of you have any ideas or good educated guesses, we would appreciate it.

Many Thanks.

Factory CS Coupes were a thin coat of body color underneath . .

Remember they never used alot of paint on the CS, but left enough bare metal so that it sealed itself with rust :p

In the recent restorations we've done, we have used contemporary primers, paints and sealers on the bare metal, then applied Wurth seam sealers, and spray application undercoat. NOT the stuff in a can!!!
Carefully done you can replcate the original look with modern protection.
