Parking lights

I posted back in December concerning my light problems. My turn signals stopped working, and I noticed I also had no brake lights. While working on these problems, I also discovered my standard and Euro parking lights were not working properly.

I replaced the emergency flasher switch as suggested here on the board, and that corrected the turn signal problem. I wasn't going to be driving the car for a while so I just let it set knowing the turn signal problem was solved.

Today I pulled the brake light switch and determined that it was the problem. I ordered a new one, and the brake light problem will be corrected tomorrow.

I'm having trouble determining where the problem lies with the parking lights. When I pull the headlight switch to the parking light position, both rear parking lights (red) come on and the left outside (low beam) headlight and under hood light comes on and NO front parking lights.

As for the Euro parking lights, with the ignition off: when I pull the turn signal lever up, I get the left rear parking light, under hood light, and the left outside (low beam) headlight. When I pull the lever down, I get the right rear parking light only.

All of the turn signal lights operate properly, and all of the headlight bulbs (high and low) operate with the headlight switch and ignition on.

Any ideas as to what is improperly connected and where to cause this problem?

Thanks for any help!

Roger,

did this happen suddenly? sounds like a ground problem. especially multiple entities ... electrical power must be either traveling down the ground circuit - and therefore not completing the ground side of the circuits ... or simply not grounding out.

what part of georgia are you in?

I'm in Madison. So where is the ground problem? Every bulb works, so they must be grounded?!?! I know a lot of stuff goes through the flasher switch because of the prior turn signal problem. I'm not sure when it all started, since I didn't notice until I started checking for the turn signal problem a while back.

Roger,

If every bulb works then ground at the illumination point is grounded.

Have you checked at the fuse (#3) for one of the grey-white (might be different color in your car) leads. There are two leads from this fuse, one goes to the rear and one goes forward. Check continuity along the lead to the bulb.

Since you have rear lights and the engine compartment light (comes from the left parking light, fuse #1), this would be the first place to look.

Could be the headlight switch, could be wiring. Switches wear over time, wires don't rewire themselves so I unless somebody messed up with the wiring I would start with the switch.

On euro parking lights from the directional stalk the source to the fuses are one lead to each from the switch; gray-green to #3 and gray-black to #1. And that, both rear parking lights work, which source come off the same fuses. Also, the directional lights go from the stalk switch to the light switch then down the above path. All this comes from a wiring diagram.

So, juice gets from the stalk action to the switch to the fuse then to the rear, and the left front and the engine light; but, not to the right front. Therefore, the light switch is sending juice down both wires to both fuses.

Now, for the illumination by the light switch with only rear lights and no front parking, that is typical for a euro. Mine is out of service at the moment so I can't confirm. That is what I remember, I used the stalk to show my parked condition and driving I never just used parking lights. On a former euro 2002, I modified to have parking lights under both scenarios.

Yet, maybe the light switch is bad on the parking segment for both left and right, it is the first position. The turn signal wires join but do not get affected by the light switch function. We need someone who knows the switch to pipe in.

You still should take a couple of minutes with a VOM to check the continuity previously mentioned.
