passenger door mirror install

I would like to install a passenger door mirror which my car has never had. The drivers door has the nice threaded anchors and I'm wondering if the passenger side has these hidden inside the door. You can't tell by looking up inside the door as there is a boxed in area that hides the location. Any ideas on this install most appreciated.

There is nothing inside the passenger door panel for mounting. You need to use special inserts (available from BMW). They are a metal basket that loosely holds a nut. You will need to drill a hole and carefully create two small slots 180° apart at the hole edge. This will be apparent when you see the fastener. Do not forget to treat the raw metal edges.

I think the part number is 07 12 9 925 804 (blind nut).

Thanks for the reply, that's great info. as I've been wondering for some time what to do. Drilling holes in my door is not one of my prefered tasks.

Brent,

Funny that you should post this now as i just installed a pass side mirror last night. Much angst drilling into the door but it came off without a hitch. Sven is correct in that you'll need the metal basket and nut for the install. However, you can install the nut and basket without cutting the extra notches. All you have to do is drill the hole SLIGHTLY larger than the OD of the basket. When i say slightly i mean only so much that the cup doesnt compress at the end when you push it in (it will be obvious when you do it). This will allow you to take the nut and insert it at an angle through the opening. After that, you just screw on the mounting bar, throw on the gasket and attach the mirror. Piece of cake.

Fully agree with Bimmerboy73. The only comment I would add is to make sure of the placement of the holes and distance between the two holes you need to make.

Thanks Orangener for the link and everyone else who responded. Looking forward to getting it done now.

My local Tru Value hardware store carries something like that. It is made out of rubber, so when you tighten the screw it pulls in the female threaded part and expands behind the hole. I wouldn't use one to attach a shoulder harness, but for mirrors, they are perfect.

Before drilling holes for your mirrors, make sure that the window channel does not block your view of the mirror, and that the location still allows the vent window to open without interfering with the mirror. And, no, I didn't figure this out "the hard way".
