Pebble Beach

Hi Pete and congrats!

Knowing a little bit of the history of the car and the excellent original condition (including the period correct lightweight Battery with 36Ah), I'm little bit curious if the judges managed to find any kind of remark about the pristine condition and originality of this correct Bat?

All the best
Cheers
Henric
Thanks Henric,

Its hard for the judges because they just can't be experts at everything. As can be imagined, the competition was pretty intense , including a 503 convertible just fully restored by Scott Grundfor - the 4 door 502 Autenrieth (gorgeous and unique), the 507 just fully restored by RM (which won) and many other great and fully prepared within an inch of their lives BMWs.

Funnily, the battery was the one contentious point:-) The judges brought along a BMW guy some of us know and I am sure he did extensive research, but he asked "why the white battery"? I explained, because its correct for this car.....He then commented that the one they have at Spartanburg has a black battery, I explained "then its incorrect" :-). There was obviously some checking done after they left my car, because they came back and thanked me for this info and a few other comments :-)

Best

Pete

Beautiful beautiful car. Congratulations. I can imagine judging of coupes to be very hard, as not many experts out there on originality.

Scott

Pete, I was so moved by your placement at this very prestigious show! Thank you for being there as it is a feather in the cap for all the CS coupe owners. For years, our beloved coupes have languished in the wings of value and as a sought after collector car (which didn't hold back some of us who just plain loved our cars). I can only imagine the blood, sweat and tears to get your CSL prepared for this event. I hope that this journey held some fun along the way for you as I can imagine how intense it was to have everything in order and proper for this show. Congratulations! WOW! I am so impressed!

You mentioned the discussion of the proper battery for your period car during the judging. This brought to mind: would it be out of line for me to ask if you have documentation that you could share with us through submitting your findings to the BMW CCA Foundation archives? Michael Mitchell, the curator, is more than capable of preserving this CSL information for future generations to research to make their CSL authentic or just to have the correct information in the archives. There are so many things I have learned over the years that I have forgotten! Just a thought, as I find that the historical aspect of our CS/CSL of great interest and value. While restoring my CS, we found precious little information (that was 23 years ago though). Thank you for this consideration and congratulations again! Bravo! Amy Lester, NC

Dear Amy,

Thank you for your note, kind words and congrats. There certainly some blood sweat and tears :-) but it was all worth it in the end. I could not be more proud or should I say honored to have just have my car chosen to be on the lawn at Pebble Beach, then to receive a 2nd in class and actually cross the rostrum, wow!, it was definitely a pinch yourself moment. A few of the guys on this forum were there ( thanks for your kind support guys) and they could all see me smiling from ear to ear, as I really could not believe it, especially seeing the competition.

Like you, I find the history of our E9s - especially CSL's extremely interesting and I actually met Micheal for the very first time in Monterey and we did have a discussion about him possibly coming up this way. Unfortunately with lots of our history, some is in documents and some is just a lifetime of knowledge gained. I have gained this knowledge from other kind souls like myself who are just as deeply enthralled by the history and the small things that matter............. those hundreds of small things that ultimately make a big thing :-)

As you say 23 years ago the information was sparse, thankfully today the sharing of information has improved our collective knowledge on our part of the hobby/passion and while I may have some knowledge of the subject matter. I owe this knowledge to other respected like minded individuals who freely share and communicate on said subject matter. Sadly, it is not in a form that can be easily entered into an archive.

That said, I always enjoy sharing and talking about our passion and look forward to meeting Micheal in a less crowded environment.

Thanks

Pete

Pete,

It has all been said!!!!!! Nothing else to add except the White Battery Story. "Why our CSL has a black battery. It must be correct because it is ours." Delighted you gave Spartanburg and BMW NA a little jolt.

I posted this link below under Bav3.5's thread as well "Legends of the Autobahn & Monterrey. Sometimes the E9/E3 commingle. I took pictures of Pete's car and other Pebble Beach pics on the Shutterfly link. I know not all of you visit us lowly E3'ers so I will post my link of the pictures I took over the weekend here as well since there are Pebble pics. Kind of a collage of sorts of the whole weekend. More e9's than E3's on link anyways. Click on the center tab up top that says "pictures and video's." On the right you will see some short CSL, M1 racing videos as well. Turn up the volume! One surprising thing about Pebble to me was how much I enjoyed the concept cars this year. Hope you enjoy! Congrats Pete to win such a prestigious event and to be the first to do so in a CSL! That's awesome, it was cool seeing it on the green!
