Carl's site no longer explains backward from forward, which model, 1867 or 1868, is needed for the 3.0CS? Every website I visit just adds to the confusion. My Bosch is a JFUD6 distributor. Jay used the 1867 in his 2800CS, 1868 "appears" to be for later injected cars. Thanks.

Chris,
I am using 1868, blue coil, in-line resistor. Injected. Black to blue coil....no difference. Red coil....not sure. Have one in the stash, but why mess with what works? Quick call to Carl....add to the confusion. Depends on what you have.....external ballast resistor? This one has been discussed before. I just know what I have now and not inclined to change.

Hi Chris - it would be best to send an email with the Bosch number of your distributor along with a photo taken from top with the cap removed to Alex at Pertronix. His email address is [email protected]. He will tell you which application you need, and you can then purchase directly from their website.
Good luck.

Thanks Dirk but my friend John who sells Royze kits talked to Pertronix, they don't seem very knowledgable. Jay is up north right now and not with his coupe, he can confirm when he returns.

I think I need the 1867, clockwise rotation, points on right side of dizzy nearest radiator.

Chris

1867 sounds right to me. Pamp, doesn't the blue coil have a resistor built in, so if you have another one in line you are doubling up? I run pertronix with a Red coil with ballast resistor and it runs great - fires up immeiately every time.

Thanks Steve. I have a red coil which states it needs the 1.8 ohm resistor, same setup on my `69 2002. Blue coil is already internally resisted.

Good point

Again, it works. Not inclined to pull the line resistor. Double doesn't seem to kill.

Hi Chris, maybe the phone operators are not knowledgable, but when I got the answer back from the fellow I mentioned earlier, it came with a string of emails from their technical / development people. At any rate, it worked for me a few times that way.

As I was leaving Murray's this morning the coupe wouldn't start and it had run roughly on the drive over. The darn points were shot and had closed up the gap after 7K miles. What a coincidence, they failed because they knew I was replacing them with a Pertronix! I reset the gap and was able to get back home. No more points ever for the e9 or 2002.

Funny

How the mind works. OK....I can buy points for under 10 bucks, so I can replace these 10 times vs buying Pertronixs....Now the kit is $85....Well worth it for peace of mind. Never had a failure....ever. Usually the issue is what I call "OFC" or "old f***ing car" The dissy is worn and tears up the rubbing block. The Pertronix doesn't care. Glad you made it home!

I don't miss adjusting the points - a great mod and one less thing to troubleshoot - mine's been on for a trouble free year and a half. I do keep a spare set of points and condensor in the trunk in case it somehow fries or fails unexpectedly.

Funny X2

I picture in my mind you and Murray, match book in hand, setting those trashed points....and for the price, yeah, I could see keeping a spare.

Matchbook in hand? There is a feeler gauge in the tool kit! Not for "IF" but WHEN!

The very learned engineers at BMW knew that the points would fail that is why they provided replacement instructions in the owners manual and supplied a feeler gauge in the tool kit...

I fact they knew lots of mechanical things were going to fail hence the huge tool box included with every car!:-o

Pamp... You have it wrong! It is not "OFC"...

it is PIECE of SH!T OLD FU*KING CAR!...

Depends

Jeff.....on the spot where the car fails. Murray's driveway? All good. The 405, solo, in the car pool lane....not gute!

Murray bumped the starter while I watched the points, they never opened. I got them open enough to limp one mile to my mechanic who reset them. I picked up the Pertronix today. I had heard of the matchbook feeler gauge, pretty clever. Glad they failed now and not on the Targa California drive I will do in April though.

There are some threads about advancing the timing a little more with the Pertronix installed - see what your car likes best. I think Carl also recommends this. Mine is a hair more advanced than with points.
