hopefully a basic one, how do I remove a petri steering wheel? I can't see anything to undo except the Allen head bolts on the boss/ hub so I assume that's what I need to do, however they don't look to have been touched in a long while, so I am unsure enough to ask you lot, thanks!

I have a turning left indicator stalk which does not engage every time, ie it just returns to centre most times, meaning I need to hold it "on" when turning left. It all cancels fine and there is no problem with the right turn indicator

Hopefully I can see what's what once the wheel is off

Thanks

Hi Drew,

You need to remove the hub and the wheels as a unit. The good news is that you don’t have to mess with those lovely old screws. Gently remove your horn button. A spring clip keeps it snug but you can pry it up with a credit card or a plastic trim tool.

Move the horn button out of the way and use a socket wrench to unscrew the nut on the steering column. Use a breaker bar if you have one, and get the tires nice and straight before you start.

Thanks Markos, at the risk of sounding like a numpty, which bit do I prise out?!

There's the black plastic BMW button itself, then there's a steel ring around that, then there's a black plastic "boss" which the steel ring sits within. The plastic button is clearly loose, and the steel ring also moves, but with the level of force I'm applying neither is currently coming out. I'm using a credit card, as I don't want to go in with a screwdriver

Remove just horn button itself without chipping it. Plastic is old and brittle and chips easily. The other (safer) way is if you can unscrew the 6 screws on the black ring underneath and lift the ring up with the horn button together . It's the spring under the hb causing the hesitation. 2nd pic shows the ring underneath the hb

if you are not confortable with pulling this plastic piece, just unscrew the allen bolts, pour some oil spray and remove them, then everything will be fine

it is more important to keep the plastic in one piece

i slip a business card in between the button and wheel. then another. then a credit card in between them and it will start the process and you can slide it around to get it off.

That is a good use for business cards. At any point in time, I usually have about 480 business cards with some old job title on them.
