Guys, I apologize if this topic has already been discussed in another thread, but I searched and couldn’t find anything. Currently, in the restoration of my post-1975 E9 CSi, I have a gas tank that is quite damaged and rusted. I’ve found some options on eBay, but they seem to be for pre-1975 models. Has anyone had experience using a pre-1975 tank in a post-1975 car, and does it work? Any other suggestions (besides having one custom-made)? I haven't been able to find one anywhere...Appreciate your feedback.

Hi Leo, I believe that I have one of each. Both are csi tanks, one mounts from the top, the other from the bottom. I will need to check the condition of both as I haven't looked at them in a while. I will also take pictures of them. Unfortunately at the moment I'm 150 miles away from where I have them. I will be near them in about 10 days. I can send an update then. These are located in California. Ed

MY memory tells me they are not exchangeable in the coupe. in the USA models, the 74 tank is narrower due to the bumper bracing and the US 74 tanks aren't applicable to any other coupes. i looked in my orange books in section 16/3 - the early injected tank is 16 11 1 110 673 (I believe is a 70L tank) and the later tank is 16 11 1 112 234 (72L tank) the later tank is for all 4340x, 4350x, 4355x + 4360x vin cars (1974+)

in looking at pics of a couple of trunks of Bat CSLs, it looks like the filler tube is at more of an angle than the pre 74 tanks, but i have not knowledge if they are the same size / mounting holes

The prior owner of my car let is sit half full for 5 years, so the upper half of the tank was pretty rusty. I managed to rehab it and its been fine for nine years now. First, I used Evaporust on the inside to dissolve the rust (because I only used a couple of gallons, I had to do multiple soaks and tilt the tank at different angles to cover the entire area). Not sure why I did this rather than using the POR 15 cleaner, but it worked. I then used the POR 15 tank sealer.
