Hi Guys,
I'm new to this form and looking for an E9 and had a few questions about rust. I'm looking for a car I can make some modern upgrades to and enjoy as often as possible. My question for this post is when it comes to looking for rust in the engine compartment, I see a lot of cars that have what looks to me like rough paint, or cracked paint surfaces around the shock towers and figured it is rust or the beginning of rust or did these cars come with any sort of coating that may be separating from the metal. When I was in high school (91-grad) I had a 73 Mazda Rx 2 and I can't remember any unevenness on the towers, they pretty much looked like what you would see under a modern car if you lifted the hood, maybe better.., that car had lacquer paint and you could buff out oxidation. Does any one have photos they can share of what a good engine compartment might look like. I don't mean concourse versions, but street going versions that people drive daily. I suppose a factory fresh reference would be pretty handy too!
Thanks in advance!

The cars originally came with sound deadening foam on top of the shock towers and a few other parts of the engine compartment. I was confused when I began looking at them to.... some people remove it because it can hide rust. Others appreciate the originality and leave it there.

That explains a lot.
Thanks
