Hi Folks,

I would like to drop my wheel faces off at the powder coater next week. There have been threads discussing matching paint colors. I'm wondering if anyone has a receipt for their wheels which includes the brand and color of powder used, and how you came about that color.

Worst case, I'll bring my polaris fuel door in with me.

Thanks!

They should be painted and not PC‘d. The best match is #744 brillantsilver from Mercedes

Hey Bud. Long time. Hope all is well. Did you ever finish these? If so how did u do them? What color did u choose?

Hi @clinton stokes,

Some info below. Not super helpful on the paint color, but I’ll reach out with more info.
Hopefully some other lessons learned you might find useful.

I ultimately powder coated my Weds some generic BBS-style silver color that my powder guy recommended. They looked good IMO, but @Gary Knoxx (who bought them) repainted with Wurth silver.

My 14” alpinas I had painted. I had the BMW shop I was working with pick the standard color they to match Alpinas. I’ll see if I can get the name.

These are the generic silver powder coated Weds. I painted the centers satin black. If you chose powder, don’t expect them to tape them off and switch colors. You can’t really do that with powder unless you bake them twice. Not even sure if you can do that. These faces were sand blasted (with sand). See how crisp the center text still looks. Powder can made the center text muddy, especially on sunken/engraved text such as that found on portions of BBS RS.

Repaint in Wurth Silver by Gary. In a sea of Alpinas it is hard not to appreciate Weds!

I don’t have a great closeup pic handy of the silver on my Alpinas. The shop used flat paint on the centers, which I don’t like. More importantly, this shows how media blasting can quickly erode the text on soft aluminum from 1972. Do not sand blast you Alpinas. Have them stripped, preferably with a mild paint stripper. I wasn’t at the shop to monitor the process, but my explicit request was to chemically strip. Regardless, it looks like my wheels were sand blasted at least once in their lifetime. I can’t absolutely confirm that my shop stripped them, but I do know that the text is worn to a nub. I can barely make out the per bumpers on *some of the wheels. Nothing I can do about that. I’ll have bigger flaws to point out on my car.

Also note that the black center should go over the edge about 1/8”. I did that with my alpinas below but not my Weds above. The satin looks much better.

Shot of mine in “Original” condition on the donor CSL, but likely redone given the condition of the center text.

thanks for the color @Markos. This is very helpful. I purchased a set of Alpina for my 2002. There were 5. One was never used and still in the box, the others had been repainted the wrong color and the paint is coming off. Ill let you know what paint color matches the original best between Wurth and the MBZ @Keshav recommend. Strange that the original wheel isn't painted black in the center....
