Hi, I didn't find this in the search, so pardon me if I may have just missed a prior discussion.

Has anybody upgraded or contemplated upgrading the door locks to power ones? I know it's mostly convenience (and part safety), but I was wondering what it would take to upgrade my 1970 2800 CS? Is there a specific part or kit that works best?

Any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

My experience

I had power locks put in when i had an alarm installed. Was not too hard to get done and the installer charged a flat fee for install which considering it was a lot harder to do on a coupe then on a toyota corolla ended up being a bargain. I just like the convenience of not dealing with keys. You might check a local car stereo place to see if they can hook you up.

Jeff,

Mind if I ask what type of power locks your guy used? I was hoping to do the install myself and thought this might help point me in the right direction. I've seen some "universal kits" out there, though I wasn't sure how universal they are with the coupe!

Thanks,

Don´t lock collector cars

I restored my first Jaguar in 1984-85. It was then 20 years old. I used it quite a lot under controlled circumstances, i.e. not parking it overnight in the city, parkinghouses or other suspicious areas.
I never locked it (and obviously never had anything valueable in the car, visible from outside). My argument behind this still holds true; if someone is going to enter the car, it is better that they use the doorhandle than that they pry the metal, glass and destroy paint, rubber, glass, locks and handles. I have many old cars which I use and I never lock them. I can lock the boot if I have hidden something but that´s rare.
Insurance companies may have other opinions (related more to new cars than collector cars). Even if they pay for the damage to be rectified, the repairs will rarely look better.

Power locks

When I bought my coupe I had the power locks removed along with the alarm (they were just a generic power lock mechanism). The wiring on these cars being what it is, it is too easy for an installer to hook these up to a source that might cause other problems. I still can't get the dome light to work from the driver's side door so I might as well blame the PO!

Clifford

Mine was as part of a clifford car alarm so i am sure it was the module and hardware from clifford. I have had it fr 3 years now and i am have no problems whatsoever.

I was going to make a system from parts from 1986 - 1993 Saab 900. and my now gone E28 It works from the key only but locks all the doors and the boot.
Relatively simple both from a wiring and physical mounting point of view plus the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual for the Saab is really good in this department

No locks for me

A coupe windshield, which I rather need, is over $700, plus installation. Don't know what the back, side windows or wing glass would cost.

Background: here in Honolulu, there are a lot of rental cars out and about. Tourists never come back to prosecute, and given all the crystal meth going around, there is a lot of petty theft from cars.

I have used my coupe to go surfing and obviously, I've parked in some areas which I have found out the hard way, are not safe. But nowadays when I go someplace and will park the car for several hours, the rule is:

NEVER CARRY MORE THAN YOU CAN AFFORD TO LOSE.

The rationale is quite simple: nothing I will leave in a parked car is worth as much as the broken window that I'll lose to keep it. So carry only a driver's license and maybe some mad money (to bus home, though they won't carry a surfboard) and leave all the other stuff at home.

One more thing: going surfing? take the Corolla.

During my restoration I installed a set of remote door lock kit that I purchased from Bavarian Auto. They are manufactured by AutoLoc and the installation was pretty straightforward but I did have the car completely disassembled at the time. I'm happy with the results and I consider it a nice stealth upgrade. About 2 years after the install the drivers door actuator stopped working, I contacted the manufacturer and they send out a replacement free. Bavarian Auto no longer carries this product but they can be ordered directly from the Hoffman Group (CK 2 Door Kit)
