If I disconnect power steering pump, and I leave the power steering reservoir to supply power steering liquid to the power steering box, is there any long term efects?

I have heard that you can do this without damaging the box but the effort required to turn will be more than with a straight manual box.

Is your car left or right hand drive?

I've considered doing this as well and everything I have heard or read indicates that disconnecting and removing the PS pump and hoses to make a manual out of power steering does not increase the effort beyond that of a similar ratio manual box. You're not creating more work so other than being a manual there is no increase inherent in the switch. Even better is the reduction in weight on the front and reduced parasitic hp lose from driving the pump. Saves on gym memberships as well.

I'm assuming that the power steering box ratio (16.9 : 1) if converted to manual will require less effort than the CSL quick ratio manual box (13.? : 1). There is a nifty electric power steering assit from the UK that sounds interesting - works only at low speeds and diminishes to zero at 30 mph. I'll try to find the link and post when back home.

Of course, I have been wrong before.

I remember it as quite heavy when I lost my servo once, heavier than a normal non servo steering. This was of course from standing still or moving very slow. At speed it was much lighter.

It was a long time ago though.....

I'm going to wave my wand and resurrect this old thread....Shazaam!

Okay...so, what are the latest thoughts of power steering delete on an E3? Is it crazy to do? Like stated up top, just removing the pump from the equation.. I have the engine out and I'm looking at having to redo the PS lines and probably take the pump apart to make sure it's not leaking...anymore. The whole thing is caked in gunk..I'd hate to sink a bunch into it and it still craps out on me.

I thought about converting to a manual box, then drove one.

Suggest ya try it before ya do it. 45 lb penalty is worth it to me for daily use

I changed my RHD csl to manual power steering. Really like the feel and it is on 205/55 - 16 tyres. The weight loss is helpful as its easier to do it that way than for me to lose it. I also did it as the manual box i had was new thus taking out some slop.

I imagine moving the battery to the rear would also help when you do this.

As a matter of fact, I was talking to Mike Pethel who did the electric e9 and I asked him what he did for power steering. He said that without the weight of the ICE engine in the front, there is no need for PS and the manual steering worked great.
