I need to replace my power steering pump. I'm wondering if anyone has any leads on a supplier of a reconditioned pump. I'm told E12's and early E24's will work fine. I've found one from a E12 and wondering if the mounting brackets are different, or if it will plug right in?

Thanks

For what its worth, I purchased all the parts directly from BMW and had my mechanic rebuild the pump on my '74...

It might be the same but RealOEM shows e9 and e3 only. If it fit others it would show up. RealOEM is your friend.

I recently cracked my pump open and it was very straight forward. All the internal components are easily removed however not all internal components are available, including the critical vane assembly which is likely the wear point.

My search on realoem reveals that E3-9-12 and 21's had this pump but there are two versions and I'm sure it depends on model and year. Check with the guys at firstfives.org, they're a helpful bunch.

Can't remember off hand but will look it up. Pump was functioning but the seals were weeping...

Not that complicated of a device. Here's a sequence of the internal parts coming out. Not shown is the lid which is held in place with a large circlip-like device that's easy to remove. The lid is so close fitting, like a piston in a cylinder, that it's difficult to remove since there is no place to grip it to pull it out and you need to do so perfectly straight or it jams. I ended up using a super powerful small magnet adhered to it and then gripping the magnet with vise grips.

While you are at it replace the bearings on the main spindle shaft in addition to the few large internal 'O' rings. Be careful not to loose those small vanes. They fall out easily.
