Hi All

I have a sqeualing power steering pump on my e9. It was not a problem until I fitted 205/14 tyres, which presumably need a bit more pressure to turn them.
The pump is weeping slightly, but not enough to cause a promlem? As the car is now 52 years old, and this is probably the original pump, I have looked into a refurb or a new alternative. There does not appear to be a source in the UK, and the seal kits are NLA for this pump which is a ZF 7672955113.
I have looked at the alternatives but am not sure which, if any, would fit. Any ideas?

If the tyres are low on air pressure, then the solution or partial solution to the problem may be obvious, increase the air pressure.
Before condemning the pump, have you examined the reservoir filter to determine if it might be impairing fluid flow?
What is the condition of the fluid? How old is the fluid?
What is the condition of the drive belt? Might it be too tight/loose or glazed?
Is your drive belt configured to power other accessories or just the steering pump?
Steering effort might also be impacted by steering box adjustment, steering linkage, strut mount bearings and hay bales.

If all else fails, there is always belt dressing. "Safe for all belts" metric and standard? o_O

I have 235/45/17's on my car with the original power steering pump and it doesn't squeal at all. Squealing in a power steering system is most always from the belt.

When checking the belt, even though it may be tight, it also may be " glazed " from age or prior slipping and has lost it's flexibility When this happens, even a tight belt can squeal a bit I would put a new belt on and then see how it is

Thanks, Rick

My pump (or steering box?) groans loudly on stock 14" tires and with what appears to be adequate belt tension. A while back I replaced the fluid reservoir filter and fluid, the groaning went away for a while. I would (and will) try replacing the ATF before anything else, it being cheaper and simpler than getting into the pump or steering box.

Do I also recollect someone who got into the box found that the vanes worked better in one direction than another?
