Hi Guys,

A spill over from my other hobby but also a sporty BMW.

Going through an old photo album I stumbled over this amazing picture of a Luftwaffe pilot and his friend (driver?) standing next to a 327 convertible.

Hope you like it as much as I do.;-)

That's pretty crazy, looks like maybe a bike seat above the drivers side headlamp? One wonders where that car is now.....maybe the one guy had a flat or the guy taking the picture was riding the bike. Looks like a bike tire in shadow....or I guess that is just bumper.

Hi Golf,

Nope that is not a saddle. It's a special lamp (Notek) that was obligatory on all military vehicles and allowed them to drive in the dark without the use of the regular headlamps. Kept them safe from air attacks.;-)

Neat piece of trivia

Wonder if the pilot (or the car) lived past 1945?

That light was pretty crazy.

I remember my parents talking all about the blackout conditions during the war along the coast of New Jersey. Gas coupons, rationing etc. My father taught aerial mapmaking at Princeton University to the pilots and navigators. But they never had a light like that on their 1940 Mercury convertible.

Interesting, even squinting and knowing what it is it is hard for me to tell that. I am used to the covers with rectangular cut outs. Makes sense though, beautiful car.

Nice picture Arde.

As spectacular as the BMW 327 are the Messerschmidt 210's in the background.

The pilot in the picture I posted is Kurt Capesius, jagdgeschwader “Edelweiss” a fighter pilot who flew the BF109, Mistal and Me262.
