Prop Shaft bearing does not line up with bearing carrier

Is there any reason why my prop shaft bearing is about 5 inches behind the bearing carrier. It came like that on the car. The previous owner had reversed the bearing and attached it to the upper part of the transmission tunnel on either side of the handbrake.

I tried searching the site but nothing came to light but `i do remember seeing a pciture of someone who had re-positioned the bearing carrier.
