So I've received my overhauled power steering pump back from Jay Stratton and it looks fantastic.

The two mounting brackets are a bit scruffy and I hate to pair them back to such a clean PSP.

Does anyone know how they were originally treated? Were they anodized?

I tried to polish them but the staining seems to be caused by a corrosion of a treatment of the metal.

It does look like a zinc coating to me.
Basically 2 colors are done with electroplating (galvanic deposition) zinc; bright zinc (silver with a blueish hue to it) and yellow zinc. The yellow is a bit more rust resistant.
The cadmium plating that is used on many parts of the e9 is a more deep yellow, towards gold and shows a uniform colour.
Yellow and bright zinc can show some rainbow effects that cadmium doesn't have.

From your images I think to see a slight yellow hint, leading me to think yellow zinc, not bright, and it's too light to be Cadmium plating ( which is almost impossible to find nowadays, as its carcinogenic. Even if you'd find it, you dont want it)

Most zinc plating companies work with a minimum order quantity, I pay 60 euro's for one bolt, and 60 euro's for a full bucket of bolts. Get as much together as you can.

If you can blast, choose glass.
If you have blasting cabinet use a wire wheel on an drill.
I find glass bead blasting to work well and leave a very smooth texture think p1000 sandpaper; it also gives a uniform silver color the steel.
Blasting with aluminium oxide gives a rougher texture, as it is more aggressive it is better suited for heavily rusted stuff such as exhaust manifolds.

I found a local plating company to do the job - but they don't do zinc. They do either chrome or nickel. I went with nickel. They will blast the parts and nickel plate for USD 60.00, which seems very fair.

I posted another question to an old thread - should I use Teflon tape on the threaded connections to ensure a seal?
