I am arriving at the conclusion that I may need to put some new holes in my coupe. In particular, I am seeking to add a heat shield from an e24 to the area underneath the passenger side of the vehicle. I have one great attachment point, but need at least two more.

Are there recommendations for treating or sealing newly drilled holes? My (rookie) thought was to use some POR15 around a bolt installed from the top of each new hole. I don't want to use clip on nuts, which would be simpler, because of the potential to scratch off any sealer or paint.

Stan - you haven't installed yours yet?

The shield is pinched between the transmission bracket and underbody along the long slot. That is the only attachment needed. The shield has was a bit wobbly at the outside. I just wedged in a small piece of foam (a couple of inches square) between the shield and body and it keeps it nicely in place.

If you drill holes - then using something like POR 15 works. The speed nuts would require you cut a slot in the metal. For the shield I would not do either.

That is exactly what I am looking to do. The pinch looks like it will securely hold the shield in place, but I am worried about rattles. If you have used only the pinch attachment point, maybe I try something like your solution.

That's the one. I got it from La Jolla; they tell me they recommend it for all auto to manual conversions.
