What are the most secure areas on the frame to mount jack-stands?
Also, given that the rust on some of our cars could create problematic safety issues with jack stand mountings are there any other precautions you would take before mounting the vehicle on jack stands?

I put jack stands on the same places on all our BMWs ('02s, e9s, e28s and e30s).

Rear: support the subframe, as close to the carrier bushing as you can get, depending on what's in the way.

Front: support at the front end of the framerail, a little before it turns up to the firewall. If you're uncertain about the strength of the framerail, spread the load out by either parallelling the rail with a 2x4 and putting the jack stand underneath, or stack a pair of 4x8s perpendicular to the rails (across the width of both rails) with stands below.

I always use wood blocking between the jackstand and whatever is supported to prevent damage to the rails. 1x scraps of oak are nice, as pine is so weak these days.

Actually spreading the load via pices of wood is a great idea. Thanks.

chicane, this setup is very tempting (from mye28 forum)

page down and one of the fellas has had 4 blocks made up the insert into the stock-reinforced lifting points.
